Recent rain causes high demand for sump pumps.

JANESVILLE, WI January 14, 2005 – The recent rainstorms have caused a high demand for sump pumps at the local Blain’s Farm & Fleet. In conditions such as this, where the weather warms up enough to cause these types of January rainstorms, the ground becomes saturated and ground water pressure builds. This pressure forces water towards any path it can find, often times cracks or fissures in your foundation and causing your basement to flood…something that a simple sump pump can prevent. A sump pump works by pulling the excess water away from the basement. Unfortunately, now that the weather is turning colder again, many people may believe they are out of the woods. That’s not the case. The water that has accumulated in the ground will simply freeze. And, the next time it warms up, your basement may again be at risk for flooding.

When selecting a sump pump, you must first decide between a submersible or a pedestal sump pump. Submersible pumps have the motor and the pump sealed in one unit. The unit then fits into a pit in the floor to pump out the water. Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted on a column above water level, and the base fits into the pit. It’s also best to find a sump pump with an automatic switch. That way, you don’t have to worry about turning the pump on at just the right time, and an automatic switch prevents the pump from burning out because it ran “dry” for too long.

A sump pump is measured by horsepower, ranging from 1/6 to 1/2HP as well as the number of gallons per minute or gallons per hour the pump will move. The more powerful the pump, the faster it will pull water away from your basement.

If you’re in need of a new sump pump, your local Blain’s Farm & Fleet is fully stocked on a wide variety of sump pumps that will meet virtually any customer’s needs.
